Do you have a mean money grabbing SEO?

Gift box Website SEO's

It's 5.19 am, and I'm still working on the SEO of a NZ gift box and gift hamper (I started at 10 p.m. last night) I'm doing a few searches by hand in Google to see how the site is doing in various searches; I have a program to do it, but like to do it the hard slow way now and again.

I notice two sites were often in the top (most expensive and often more than $10 per click) Google Adwords position (that’s the position that’s right above the non-paid results) and you often almost click them by mistake.

So I decide to have a look at these site and see why they didn't highly rank in Google natural Search Engines Results Page (SERP), of course I was thinking these sites couldn't have any SEO work done on them. I had intended to use the sites as examples of how SEO could help.

Shock! Horror! They have had SEO done on them! Both sites were optimized by different Auckland SEO firms; and expensive SEO firms at that. So off I went to visit these SEO firms online; I further investigated the back-links to these firms that help them do better online (the SEO companies, not their clients) in SERP’s for keywords like SEO Services and guess what.... the two gift-box sites were each sending links to their respective SEO firms; 4 from one gift-box site and 8 from the gift hamper site.

So I click back to these gift sites, and have a look at the sites that were linking to them... You know, these high priced SEO firms, had not given their respective gift sites one single link. Not one lousy stinking link.

And to top it off; on closer inspection of the SEO work done (although at first glance the SEO work looked ok), with my experienced eye, I could see that the on-page SEO was basically a waste of time.

So the owners of these gift websites, apart from paying through the nose for a good looking website, had also paid for SEO work; and now still had to pay at least $10 per click to get people to their website and hopefully to buy their goods.

Now I don't deny that both websites the gift box and hamper sites were nice looking websites, the graphic and page layout was professional and  looked great; the photos of the products were stunning, with nice fake drop shadows added (obviously photos taken and enhanced by a professional photographer and graphic artist). The site looked lovely, but these sites main job was to send links to the SEO and web design firm that created them.

I'm probably underestimating it when I say that each site (selling approx 250 products each), would have cost the owner at least $40 thousand each. Consider the cost of the web design, the photography and so called SEO; and now they are paying at least $10 per visitor...Hell it makes me so mad when people are taken advantage of like this. I guess these gift box businesses could have had the websites made as a tax write off; they would be excellent for that purpose....

The thing that really bugs me too is I would dearly love to write to these gift box businesses, and suss them out (not to try and get their SEO business, but to tell them they are being ripped off big time), but that would be seen as questionable conduct on my part.

I HATE SEO COMPANIES THAT RIP OFF THEIR CLIENTS. GOD DAMMIT GIVE YOUR CLIENTS A FAIR GO, OR ADMIT YOU CAN'T DO SEO.

Ok, I've had my rave.

SEO costs more, becuase it's getting harder to do.

John a Search Engine Optimization Consultant in Seattle, Washington is one of my favorite SEO blog writers, he writes well, and wrote a very good post about how SEO is very more expensive as time goes by. He also wrote a very good article about advanced seo and what it actually is, which I will write more about here.

Just last week Google again changed the way they find the appropriate webpage for your searches, Google now scans blogs much better, because blogs are more likely to be up-to-date than a website, that may have been built 5 years ago, and be hopelessly out of date.

Remember Google isn’t particularly interested in your single website, they are only interested in giving their clients (searches) the most up-to-date and accurate information it can and if your site doesn’t cut it, then your site moves further down the search results.

Many of the old ways of doing SEO don’t work anymore. When I say old ways of doing SEO, I mean the techniques that did work, were quick and easy to do, and that most so-called SEO’s still do, which are actually just a waste of your money, and their time, but since they don’t actually keep up with what search engines are doing, they don’t actually know things are changing.

In the past week, I have had many arguments with people who profess to be SEO experts, pointing out how various techniques no longer worked, one particular techniques changed at least 4 months ago, while I was so unwell, yet I still knew about it. All 4 seo’s had to agree, because I proved it, that their skills were well behind the times.

The really good thing is that the tried and true ways of attracting more people to your website through search engines, are still working, it was the cheap easy and nasty ways that the search engines are finding ways to weed out the results generated from them.

So an SEO job, that 4 months ago, I might have quoted say $2000 to do, will now cost around $5000 perhaps even more, I’m more inclined to make at least 1 years contract to do SEO on a site these days, as the days of simply editing meta and alt tags have gone forever,(not that it was ever quite that easy) as both search engines, and other websites seo techniques are getting more advanced.

Only 2 years ago it was possible to get a website with almost any theme, ranking highly in search engines for a number of phrases, for around a $2500 price tag, today because so many other websites have had a lot of SEO work done to them, and the work that had been done to each website now has changed so much, and is so labor intensive that price tag is more likely to be costing at the very least $5500 and quite possibly around $10,000, and even then that would only be for the more obscure keywords.

I have had a lot of quote requests from SEO websites recently, meaning websites that offer SEO services, are actually coming to me, asking me how much to make their website appear in search engines. One such company I suggested they go to an offshore SEO Company, as they work for penny’s an hour, and this clients budget was very low. They replied that they were in fact an a cheap offshore SEO company, and they had done everything they could think of, and still weren’t ranking well, and had now started to spend a lot of money on Google adsence to get any clients at all, and couldn't afford to pay for much SEO... interesting thinking, since good SEO is well known to be the the cheapest form of advertising …… need I say more…..

Do meta tags help optimize your website SEO

Meta tags make a huge difference to the way your website ranks in search engines.
Many professionals will disagree, but the proof is in the results.
Last year I was asked to optimise a mature website, the site sold giftbaskets. The website was an osCommerce website offering about 300 products and although the pages were listed in google, they didn't start appearing until page 31 for relevant searches. The site recieved no visitors from any search engines at all according to the statistics.

For a start all I did was add description meta tags and title tags. Within 3 days visitors started arriving at the website coming through search engines. With a couple of weeks sales started coming in regularly, and now 7 months the website is recieving over 2000 visitors a month, but more importantly, these visitors are spending so well in fact the website is for sale.

I believe in targetting website visitors, visitors to your website aren't worth anything at all if they don't make you money in some way while they are there, you are by far better to have 2000 visitors a month, that spend an average of say $10, than 200,000 that spend only $200 in total.

I'll be staying in New Zealand for a while, but since most of my clients are in the USA anyway, I really wish that clients from other country's in the world would realise that it doesn't matter where your SEO lives, they can do the work, since it doesn't require meeting a client to do a very good job of getting their website to rank highly in search engines.

Marketing ur Website Google Adwords or SEO

Marketing your website online you have a couple of chices, you can use some service like google adwords, or sponsered links, or pay for me to do SEO on your website. Each way of online marketing has it's own merits.

Heres a very basic overview of both methods.

Google Adwords.
you select your keywords, write your own adverts, set a monthly budget, select where you want your ad's to appear, either or on search engine results, google does all(well a lot of) the hard work, it is a very good service if you have a reasonabley large budget, but the ad's do appear almost immediately, the downside is, as soon as you don't pay the ad's stop, and visitors stop.

A budget for adwords could be $500-$750 per month would result in approx 100-130 targeted visitors per month.

SEO by Canz
SEO does all the keyword research, We do all the on page SEO, and your webpages start appearing in the natural results of search engine searches. You may pay more initally, but once the work is don't, it doesn't stop.

A reasonable budget for SEO could be $2000 initally, and $300-$400 a month until the desired number of clients is acheieved. You could expect to receieve at least 500 visitors per month initally, and an extra 50 per month there after. (after 12 months you will be getting at least 1000 visitors per month)

Although the numbers I use above only estimates, I have taken them from results I have easily acheieved, but indivual results will vary... it only makes sence that a website with 40 pages would attract more visitors than a website with 3 pages.

Is it worth SEO'ing my website

Without a doubt the answer is yes, it's worth doing SEO or having your website SEO'ed, in most cases since many websites don't have any SEO or very little seo done, even a small amount of seo will result in some surprising outcomes. More otfen than not it's a small amount of regular seo work that makes a difference.

It's often worthwhile approaching a SEO, and this one in particular lynny@canzdesign.com :) saying, hey Lynny, I have a website selling papercups with holes in them, my market is mainly NZ based, I have three competitors, I don't want to spend more than $800 initially and am happy to spend $150 a month on an ongoing basis, what sort of SEO work can you do for me.

Since I'm wanting to set up an regular income, and papercups with holes aren't a big seller, I would probably say, let's start with $300 and have an ongoing investment of $80, remember with most business, the first quote can always be adjusted as there are always exceptions, or different ways of looking at things.

Does your website deserve to rank well in Search Engines

Have you ever considered, that maybe your website doesn't deserve to rank well in search engines?

A search engines job is to list websites that are most relevant to the search query in order of importance.

The way a search engine works out how relevant your webpage/website is relevant is pretty simple really, the trick is finding out what people requiring your service are actually searching for, and then making your website relevant to those types of searches. this sounds easy enough, but it's a lot more time comsuming than you would think, because not only does an seo need to make your webpage/site relevant for particular phrases, they also have to make it more relevant than all the other websites on the internet that deal with that subject.

It's pretty obvious that the first or highest use of the internet is information gathering, if that information being sort is related to the product or service you are offering, and your website ranks highly for the search query someone makes, and someone clicks on your link from a search engine or wherever online, then you are part way to making a sale.

So if your website is just page after page of products for sale, with little or know information about the products, just a thumbnail of the product, clicking through to a larger picture, maybe with a description full of none keyword types word and a buy now button, quite frankly the changes of anyone actually even finding your website using a search engine are pretty nominal.

You would do well to hire someone like me, I'm a content writer and an SEO, so I write content pages that will entice search engines to see your website as important on a particular or several subjects, important enough to rank your webpages highly for many searches.

You may wonder how someone that is dyslexic could ever write for other peoples website, but thats another blog post all on it's own.

MSN - 7.04%
Ask - 4.14%

So unless you are ranking well for searches in google you just aren't getting your share of the search engine traffic. Imagine how many hit's to your website you could get if you ranked #2 in google, compared to #2 in Ask.

Changing website content will help SEO

I thought you maybe interested in a service I offer to website owners.

Instead of investing in a lot of SEO work at once which could be an investment of $2000 or more, depending on the size of the website, and the work that needs doing, I have quite a few clients who own small websites, who invest a small amount each month and I make small changes to their website, and do SEO at a slower pace. This ongoing work means their websites stay ranking highly in search engines.

This system helps first the client but also me, clients find it much easy to set aside a regular monthly amount and on my part it's good to know there is a regular income happening each month. I of course have regular clients who have had SEO work done, and I tweak their sites each month but this system is different.

For people who maybe aren't sure if seo will help, or that just can't invest in a lot of seo work at this time this system works well.

I have mentioned before that I have a goal of earning a regular income of $2000 USD a month, this doesn't of course count the one off jobs I do, although they amount to much more than this, I also want that regular income, so if there's a slow month, like January is, I know I have work to carry on until the next big job comes in. I often find that these regular clients get extra work done between the big jobs.

So if you are thinking about getting seo done on your website, or have considered it but just can't justify a large investment at this time, contact me, if you can be straight up, and let me know how much you'd like to invest monthly in marketing your website, We'll see what arrangement we can come to.

Links to your website or the key to SEO

Getting links to your website is the key to SEO, with enough links good links to your website from good high ranking webpages you will start ranking well for many search phrases, your website is optimised for.

This sounds easy enough huh. It isn't, since you have to have the right type of links, from the right type of website, to the right pages within your website.

So how many links do you need?

There is no hard and fast rule to how many links you need, but if you had say 1000 links to your website and the words that are in the text of the link are good keywords for your business type, and the links are on good high ranking webpages you will probably get a PR4 ranking with is considered good. If you use linking text rather than buttons, you can cut done the number of links you require considerably.

So what are linking words? Quite simply they are words that make the link, like Best SEO that gets great Results if you click on those words, you would endup at my other SEO website. And the words that are the link are the linking words. Many people make the mistake of making their url the link words as well as the link, this doesn't help get your website any higher in search engines apart from if someone types your url into a search engine.

Many people choose to have buttons as a link, although this is helpful for maybe getting people to your website, eg they see your cool button and click on it, but as far as helping your website to rank better in search engines it won't help at all. So you have to decide do you want to get people to your website from another site in particular or do you want to Rank well in Search Engines for many phrases.

You may think that getting people to your website is the goal, which of course it is, but would you rather only get visitors from say 30 websites, or rank well in search engines for possible thousands of search phrases so potientially millions of people could find your website.

Getting confused? Ok, look at it this way say I don't bother with buttons links, but make text links to my various websites, and say somewhere in the text link I have the words Best SEO it might be NZ's Best SEO or Worlds Best SEO, Best SEO that get's results, SEO at it's Best or Your Best Bet for an SEO The important thing is the words Best SEO is somewhere in the linking text.
And someone wanting SEO types in a search engine "Best SEO tips" if one of the pages on my website is to do with tips, even though I didn't have the word tips in the linking text my site would rank fairly well for Best SEO, and the "tips" page would rank highly.

If I have enough links like this around the internet and I'm talking about thousands of links that say that have the word "Best SEO" I would rank highly for someone doing a search for Best SEO, I just tried that search in google.co.nz using the search pages from NZ, and I'm ranking #5 on page number 1 and it's actually to a webpage that has nothing to do with SEO on my website. It's actually a photo manipulation page in our portfolio. lol, but if someone visited that link they would see plenty of links to things SEO related.
I have the words "Best SEO" in links in about 100 places, if I spent a lot of time and had say 500 links using those words, I might even rank in google on page 2 for a search for simply "seo", if I had say 1000 links around the internet I might get to rank on page 1 for "seo" I choose to spend my time working on my clients websites, getting them ranking highly rather than my own website.

Now I bet you are more confused than ever, thats why I suggest you let me worry about how to get your website ranking highly in search engines, sure you can make a few links yourself around the internet to your website, the more there are the better, but I can tell you now that getting 500 permanant links takes a lot of time.

How long does it take for SEO to Work

SEO has very fast results, I have seen changes made on an existing website start to show is search engines within 2 or 3 days.
If the SEO is done correctly often within 1 or 2 weeks all changes that have been made will have filtered through to the search engines results.
With a brand new website, it's quite common for the site to start appearing in search engines within a week, and to be fully indexed within a month, (depending on how large the site is, but for most website of 50 pages or under a month is all that is needed for a new website.

Many people still don't get how the internet works, and still look for someone to make their website or do SEO on their website, someone that lives locally. Yet there is no need what-so-ever.

When the gods want to punish you.....
They start granting your wishes...

How to tell a good SEO.

So if their are so many sleazy SEO out their, how do you tell them from the good ones.

1. A good SEO won't give you a quote before they know all the details about your website and what results you want to achieve, unless that quote is for at least multiple $10,000.

2. A good SEO will usually talk in words you understand, rather than try to boggle you with geek speak.

3. A good SEO will probably ask you your budget, and work within that budget.

4. A good SEO will ask you a lot of questions, you may think some questions are odd, but the less guesswork a SEO has to do the more likely you are to get a good job.

5. A good SEO will invite you to ring them to discuss your needs. Although a lot of work from home's myself included, don't like to give out their home address, honest people are quite happy to give out their phone numbers... ring them, at least once to confirm that the number they gave is the correct one. A landline number is perferable over a cell phone one.

6. A good SEO will never make rash promises, like yes I can get you to #1 position especially before they have researched the phrases you are after.

7. A good SEO will always ask if they can have access to the geeky side of a website, before they give you a quote, remember this, before you get a quote, you SEO should know if they can have access to the backend of the website... this doesn't mean that they have to be able to access it, but if they can't the SEO work that has to be done is quite different, much more time consuming so will cost more, or the type of work they do is the sleazy type, that can be turned off if you stop paying the monthly SEO fee, that might not have been mentioned in the original quote.

8. A good SEO will always be happy to answer your questions, and will be happy for you to question them, I have had a client say they were going to contact someone that knew SEO, I gave them all my contact details to pass onto their friend. Good SEO have nothing to hide about their work.

SEO isn't a one off thing that can be done, that works the same with every website, sure there are some things that every website needs, but each website, in my experience is unique, even two website selling the same thing.
SEO is an ongoing process, and although some SEO make one charge which includes the ongoing work, if you see or hear an SEO saying, your site will take a week or a month to do then be weary.

Ask your SEO what they are going to do to your website, then contact someone like me, offer to pay me $100 to look over their list, I promise you the $100 you pay me will be the best money you ever spend. Cause if there's something sleazy in there, I'll pick them up on it. Often it's the way something is worded, not what it says that's the tip off. And very often people that don't speak you native language will take advantage of this.

How Many Links do I need? SEO Tip

A big problem with a lot of people that are trying to save money, and do their own SEO is they see something, like "you need links", and run with it, without actually knowing what is required.

For the record, you need links to your website, not neccessarily from your website. The problem comes with how do you do this.

And just any links to your website doesn't work either, they have to be from specific pages on specific sites.

I know so many of my clients have complained to me, I have links, and looking at their websites these links go out to different websites, often the website will be related to their website, which is great for the website they have linked to, but actually makes their own website weaker, if their aren't websites like the ones they are linking to, linking back to them.....

As you can see just from what I have written so far, it's more complicated than "you need links", and any good SEO has already made the mistakes you are making, and knows the best way to get links,
sure some SEO's cheat, actually a lot of SEO's cheat, and will and take your money, and still give you the wrong type of links, becuase the right type of links are very hard to find.

Hard work or time consuming work, although some SEO's are willing to do the work on their own sites, so they rank well in search engines, won't do the work on your site, especially not for the relatively small amount of money they charge for their SEO services.

A good SEO is also as hard to find as honest carsales man, but we are out there. I'll write another post, explaining how to disearn a good seo.

Cheers Lynny
Not a sleazy SEO

When the gods want to punish you.....
They start granting your wishes...

How Much should SEO cost, what some people charge for their SEO services

How much does SEO cost?

This is a really hard question to answer, it's a bit like asking how much a car costs, it just depends, one of the first considerations is how big is the site, what is it selling.

And one of the first questions I reply to this "how much" question with, is what is your budget? Then I ask how many visitors they would like to their website each month.

When I client tells me how much their budget is, and how many clients they are wanting to their website each I can give them a few options.

For a low budget generally speaking though, often $500 plus $1 per each visitor per month is a good way of working it out. This works at the lower end of the scale anyway, so if a client is looking only looking at another 1000 visitors a month, then often $1500 will be a good starting point one of the SEO clients I have has paid $2500 on SEO over 2 years and is getting an extra 7000 visitors per month, so this simple sum doesn't always work. Once you start looking at 10's of thousands of new visitors a month, the budget per visitors drops dramatically, getting visitors to a website initially is the hardest task, getting more visitors in general isn't that time consuming.

I have an SEO client that I've just started talking about SEO on her website, she has a budget of $30,000 over the next year, and if wanting to increase her website visitors to 250,000 per month. The client has an global art gallery online, so generating plenty of visitors should be easy enough. A lot of time will be spent link building, and building the pagerank of a lot of the internal pages, I have 4 clients with artist websites. I only do minimal work for them, but have always found linkbuilding easy for these site.

Cheers Lynny
www.seobycanz.com

I was recently reading a blog for an SEO Who always quoted $50,000 then $5000 per page for SEO work, looking at what he did when doing SEO on a website, the sites he did seo for, they were doing ok, but nothing that special, they were ranking between 7th and 9th on page #1 of google, so paying more for SEO, doesn't mean you will get better results, if just means your SEO doesn't work with people on smaller budgets, personally I would perfer have my site ranking higher for more phrases, than to be able to say, I spent $70.000 on SEO, I guess though that there is a certain amount of snob value in saying that huh.

Is SEO really necessary, do I have to have SEO

I often get asked if SEO is really necessary, and the quick answer is no, it isn't essential if you aren't trying to make money or sales for your business.

If you spend your whole day online, posting in forums, writting responses in blogs, writting articles, emailing a lot of people, SEO isn't strickly necessary, especially if you aren't selling anything.

However, and this is a big however, if you are wanting to get more visitors to your website, want to make sales or increase sales, and don't have time to sit all day and everyday at the computer, finding ways to get people to your website, then SEO will definately need to be part of your marketing plan.

Also, unless you have some basic SEO skills in the first place, all the time spent online posting etc will be lost within about a year, often forums will prune their posts, so any posts you did make will be either lost in the archives, or pruned (cut out) of forums and blogs. So it's well worthwhile spending about 80 to 100 hours learning the basics of SEO.....

When you think about spending 90 hours learning some SEO basics, and then say 8 hours a day online putting those SEO skills into practise, you soon see that hiring an SEO like Me isn't such a bad option. Even if you only consider your time as being worth $25 an hour, the time you take to learn Basic SEO as 90 hours, you have already lost $2250. If you invested that same $2250 on SEO you would find your website ranking a lot better in search engines.

And thats only the time you would have spent learning about SEO, then comes the really hard bit, actually putting what you have learnt into practice, yet if you had of invested in my SEO Services, you would already be well on the way to actually making the money.
