I've recently taken part in a conversation about internal linking, and thought I would share that conversation with you.

Internal linking is like it sounds, is linking within pages of the same site.

Oliver another group member, was saying that internal linking was important, but it had to be done the right way, and not just willy nilly, and linking from brown shoes to a brown truck isn't as worthwhile as linking brown shoes to a page with other brown clothing, while this is true to an extent, it's not generally the case, because of the nature of a web site which is usually pages related to other pages with the same theme.

I haven't seen any proof that brown shoes should only be linked to other pages with brown clothing, and not to brown furniture or brown trucks. I would very much like to see proof of that working to give more link juice to a page.

It makes sense to link from pages of brown clothing to other pages of brown clothing, just for the visitors convenience but I don't think or I should say I haven't seen evidence that Google has some sort of list of all possible clothing items and give a link 2 less brownie point for a link to a brown car rather than a brown hat.

It might be true that linking between pages that had other types of similes like, brown blouse and brown dress, that were both woman's clothes, and had similar sizing, and were all brown might make a difference, but then in real life stores online that sell those sort of products usually sell all colors and sizes for a particular style on the same page. but the idea is there.

Mens Brown shoes, style c4, manufacture name x, color number 101 to Mens brown shoes style g9, made by manufacture name x, color number 101 would probably have more juice, but just because of the other factors.

I suppose this sort of example could be used to "show" a client how valuable your SEO advice was, because it sounds good, and like it might be right, but is it actually one of the parts of an Googles Secret Recipe for ranking a page, I think not, but like I said I would like to be proved wrong.

Google is after all, just a database, that searches for exact words and phrases, and now is looking for similar to words or means the same as words and phrases, and matches them up, granted it does a fantastic job of matching that words and phrases, but it's not thinking for itself yet.... or is it.... lol...

If you do a search for the two words Click Here in google and probably all search engines, the adobe pdf reader download page will rank #1.

Yet no where on the actual page are the words click here mentioned. So how does it rank #1.

How indeed.... it's from the millions of websites that tell people to Click Here to download the PDF reader.

This just shows how links to your site, or the words in those links can rank your site for keyword that aren't even mentioned in the conventional places on a well optimized website.

The problem of cause is how many links you would have to have around the internet to rank well for any set phrase.

But for instance if I link to Best SEO in San Diego or San Diego's best SEO and then have those words in the conventional places a well optimized website has it's keywords, the number of times you have to have links containing the keywords, must be less. I don't know how many links using your keywords you might need, it really does depend on each websites competition, and the pagerank and number of links they have, but it would be many 100 less links, don't you think.

How much does SEO cost?

This is a really hard question to answer, it's a bit like asking how much a car costs, it just depends, one of the first considerations is how big is the site, what is it selling.

And one of the first questions I reply to this "how much" question with, is what is your budget? Then I ask how many visitors they would like to their website each month.

When I client tells me how much their budget is, and how many clients they are wanting to their website each I can give them a few options.

For a low budget generally speaking though, often $500 plus $1 per each visitor per month is a good way of working it out. This works at the lower end of the scale anyway, so if a client is looking only looking at another 1000 visitors a month, then often $1500 will be a good starting point one of the SEO clients I have has paid $2500 on SEO over 2 years and is getting an extra 7000 visitors per month, so this simple sum doesn't always work. Once you start looking at 10's of thousands of new visitors a month, the budget per visitors drops dramatically, getting visitors to a website initially is the hardest task, getting more visitors in general isn't that time consuming.

I have an SEO client that I've just started talking about SEO on her website, she has a budget of $30,000 over the next year, and if wanting to increase her website visitors to 250,000 per month. The client has an global art gallery online, so generating plenty of visitors should be easy enough. A lot of time will be spent link building, and building the pagerank of a lot of the internal pages, I have 4 clients with artist websites. I only do minimal work for them, but have always found linkbuilding easy for these site.

I was recently reading a blog for an SEO Who always quoted $50,000 then $5000 per page for SEO work, looking at what he did when doing SEO on a website, the sites he did seo for, they were doing ok, but nothing that special, they were ranking between 7th and 9th on page #1 of google, so paying more for SEO, doesn't mean you will get better results, if just means your SEO doesn't work with people on smaller budgets, personally I would perfer have my site ranking higher for more phrases, than to be able to say, I spent $70.000 on SEO, I guess though that there is a certain amount of snob value in saying that huh.
